BJP candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay and former judge, petitions the Calcutta High Court regarding the ‘attempt to murder’ charge filed against him.

Last week, a complaint was lodged against Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former justice of the Calcutta High Court and BJP Lok Sabha candidate, along with others, accusing them of assaulting dismissed school staff.

On Monday, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former judge and BJP Lok Sabha candidate, approached the Calcutta High Court, claiming excessive police response following the filing of an ‘attempt to murder’ case against him and his associates in Tamluk, West Bengal, last week.

Abhijithttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abhijit_Gangopadhyay Gangopadhyay filed the petition before Justice Jay Sengupta’s single bench, who scheduled a hearing for Tuesday. Rajdeep Majumder, Gangopadhyay’s lawyer, argued in court, alleging malicious intent and excessive response from the police. He contended that the FIR was filed with the aim of obstructing Gangopadhyay’s Lok Sabha campaign.

Having stepped down from his position as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in March, Gangopadhyay is vying for a seat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 from the Tamluk constituency in Bengal’s East Midnapore district, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bharatiya_Janata_Party

On May 6, the police filed an FIR against Gangopadhyay and Bharatiya Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Prashanta Das for purportedly assaulting dismissed school workers at their demonstration venue. The complaint, lodged by certain teaching and non-teaching staff who were terminated following a Calcutta High Court decree, led to the registration of the FIR at Tamluk Police station under Section 307 (attempted murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other relevant sections against Gangopadhyay and Das.

The occurrence unfolded as Gangopadhyay, accompanied by party comrade Suvendu Adhikari, spearheaded a procession prior to submitting his candidacy for the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency.
