Election: The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, announced the dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections today. The elections will happen in 7 phases, starting from April 19 and finishing on June 1. The results will be declared on June 4. He also mentioned that the assembly polls for Andhra Pradesh will be on May 13, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh on April 19, and Odisha on May 13.

In a press conference, the Election Commission stated that they are working to address issues like muscle power, money influence, spreading false information, and violations of the Model Code of Conduct, which can affect fair elections.

Approximately 97 crore people are eligible to vote in the upcoming elections. Voters above 85 years old will be allowed to vote from their homes. The Election Commission assured that basic facilities like drinking water and toilets will be available at all polling booths.

The current Lok Sabha’s term ends on June 16, and a new House must be formed before that. The terms of four state assemblies also end in June.

In the last general elections, the BJP won 303 seats, aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Congress secured 52 seats. These elections are crucial for the Opposition parties, as they strive to challenge the BJP’s dominance.
