Jammu Kashmir Election Results 2024: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) garnered the largest vote share in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections, even though the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance secured victory. This election marked the first in J&K following the revocation of Article 370. With a majority in the assembly, the Congress-NC coalition is set to form the next government.
Additionally, Independent candidates secured more seats than Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Elections. The PDP managed to win only three seats in the 90-member J&K Assembly, while Independents claimed seven seats across the union territory.
The Jammu and Kashmir election results for 2024 were announced on Tuesday, with the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance achieving a decisive victory. The NC became the largest single party, securing 42 seats, while the Congress claimed six. Together, their alliance won a total of 48 seats, narrowly surpassing the majority mark by two.
In the union territory, a political party requires 24 seats to establish a government. The BJP secured 29 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made its debut in Jammu and Kashmir by winning the Doda Assembly constituency.
How much vote share did the National Conference (NC) and Congress receive in the J&K elections?
The BJP led in vote share in Jammu and Kashmir with 25.5 percent, followed by the NC at 23.4 percent. The Congress captured 11.9 percent of the votes, while the PDP garnered 8.8 percent.
Founded 25 years ago, the PDP, once in alliance with the BJP, is led by former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. The party’s first electoral victory in Jammu and Kashmir came in 2002, and in the 2014 elections, it secured 28 out of 87 seats.
The assembly elections, conducted after a ten-year hiatus, were held in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1. It marked the first Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir following the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, which led to the division of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
