The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the government-operated RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in North Kolkata on Friday.
On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) released a firm statement demanding swift action regarding the alleged rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate resident doctor in Kolkata, warning of nationwide protests if their demands are not addressed within 48 hours.
The IMA conveyed profound shock at the murder of the trainee doctor and condemned the existing conditions that permitted such a horrific crime to occur on campus.
The IMA stated, “The entire medical community in India is stunned by this savage murder. This crime highlights the chaos and insecurity present on the campus.”
What impact has the murder of the trainee doctor had on the campus and the broader medical fraternity?
On Friday morning, the body of a young doctor, a trainee in chest medicine, was discovered in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College. The autopsy revealed that the medical student had been sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered to death.
The distressing details of the injuries, including bleeding from the eyes, mouth, and private areas, along with multiple other wounds, have escalated demands for prompt justice.
The four-page report revealed, “There was bleeding from both eyes and the mouth, along with injuries to the face and nails. The victim also bled from her private areas and sustained injuries to her abdomen, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.”
The IMA presented three primary demands: a detailed and impartial investigation into the case, a thorough review of the conditions that allowed this crime to occur, and the immediate implementation of measures to enhance the safety and security of doctors, especially women, in their work environments.
The association has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to authorities to apprehend the culprits and meet their demands. The IMA has warned that if these conditions are not met, it will lead to nationwide protests, with the medical community ready to take strong action.
Police have arrested an individual for his suspected role in the sexual assault and murder of the trainee doctor. On Saturday, a city court granted a 14-day police remand for the accused, an outsider, who faces charges under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS.
According to Md Salim, how has the Kolkata Police Commissioner been involved in the case?
Meanwhile, CPI(M) activists staged a rally in Kolkata calling for justice in the murder case.
“The city once known as the ‘City of Joy’ has now turned into the ‘City of Fear,'” said CPI(M) West Bengal Secretary Md Salim to ANI. “Even a doctor is not safe here. The Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is closely associated with CM Mamata Banerjee, and the Kolkata Police Commissioner has been suppressing the case. We demand a judicial inquiry into this issue.”
