NEET Data Report Sparks Conflict of Interest Debate: IIT Madras Director’s Role in Exam Body Under Scrutiny

NEET Data Report Raises Conflict of Interest Concerns IIT Madras Head’s Involvement in Exam Body Responds.

The exam body informed the Supreme Court that the IIT Madras director’s role as an ex-officio member of the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) governing body does not constitute a conflict of interest. This statement follows the Centre’s use of a report by Professor V. Kamakoti , IIT Madras director, to emphasize the absence of malpractice in the nationwide exam for MBBS course admissions.

What were the main concerns raised by Narendra Hooda regarding the NEET UG data analytics report?

Narendra Hooda, representing the petitioner in the NEET UG case, argued that the data analytics report was unreliable and claimed a conflict of interest due to the IIT Madras director’s membership in the NTA governing body.

In response, the NTA stated in a supplementary chargesheet that the director of the IIT conducting the JEE (Advanced) exam for engineering aspirants is an ex-officio member of the NTA governing body. This year, IIT Madras conducted the exam. However, the core operations of the NTA are managed by its managing committee, while the governing body focuses solely on policy matters.

According to the NTA, the IIT Madras director had designated another professor to attend the governing body’s meetings. However, this professor had not attended any meetings since December last year. Furthermore, the IIT Madras director himself had not attended any NTA governing body meetings since December 2022.

This increase is observed across various cities and centers and is attributed to a 25 percent reduction in the syllabus. Furthermore, the high marks are distributed among numerous cities and centers, suggesting a very low probability of malpractice, it stated.
