Mamata Banerjee’s Pujo Invitation, Doctor’s Family Shares, “We Celebrated Together”

Suvendu Adhikari, BJP’s Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, questioned whether Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee viewed people as her puppets.

What was the public reaction to Mamata Banerjee‘s statement urging people to focus on Durga Pujo amid the ongoing investigation?

Amid the uproar over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s call for people to “focus on Durga Pujo” has drawn widespread backlash. Speaking to the media, the Trinamool Congress leader said, “It’s been a month since the August 9 incident. I urge everyone to return to Pujo celebrations and ask the CBI to expedite justice.”

Commenting on the ongoing protests demanding justice for the victim, which have been ongoing across Bengal for the past month, Mamata Banerjee stated, “Protesting on the streets every night causes disturbances. Many areas have elderly residents, and using microphones affects their sleep. There are pollution control rules prohibiting microphone use after 10 pm, which we have ignored. It’s been a month now.”

She stated that the investigation is now with the CBI. “The woman who was brutally raped and murdered deserves justice. This must be expedited through a fast-track court. Bengal’s image is being tarnished globally. There are WhatsApp groups, and those who once lived, studied, and thrived here are now defaming Bengal from outside,” she remarked.

The victim’s parents sharply criticized her remarks, saying, “How can we think of festivities when we’ve lost our daughter? Let her bring our daughter back. Would she have made the same comments if this tragedy had struck her own family?”

“We used to celebrate Durga Puja with our daughter, but we won’t be observing this festival or any other for years. Her comments are deeply insensitive,” the parents stated in a PTI report.

The Chief Minister’s remarks were met with strong condemnation from opposition parties, including the BJP and CPM.

How did Suvendu Adhikari’s remarks about the Chief Minister’s view of people being “puppets” impact the political discourse in Bengal?

BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, questioned whether the Chief Minister viewed people as mere puppets. “Do you think they will simply stand down, sit quietly, or halt protests at your command? The Pujo festivities haven’t begun yet, and the demon remains unvanquished. Exercise patience; the power of the Mother has awakened and will purify Bengal,” he posted on X.

Senior CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty commented, “Banerjee’s sole expectation is that the widespread protests will dwindle and that people will transition to a festive mindset, ignoring pressing issues of safety and security.”
