The BJP representation in the Rajya Sabha has decreased to 86 seats, resulting in the NDA falling short of the majority threshold.

Following the completion of the term of four of its MPs, the BJP now holds 86 seats, with the NDA, led by the BJP, having a total of 101 seats. This is below the majority mark of 113 in the 245-member House.

The BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seen a reduction in its Rajya Sabha representation, dropping to 86 seats after four members completed their terms on July 13. This marks the first decline in the party’s upper house strength in several years.

The departing members were Sonal Mansingh, Mahesh Jethmalani, Rakesh Sinha, and Ram Shakal. Initially nominated by President Droupadi Murmu as independent members upon the ruling party’s recommendation, they later formally aligned themselves with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

With their departure, the BJP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha has reduced to 86 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance now holds 101 seats. This is below the current majority threshold of 113 in the 245-member House.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) anticipates winning two seats each in Bihar, Maharashtra, and Assam, along with one seat each in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Tripura, capitalizing on their numerical edge over the opposition.

The four newly nominated members are expected to align with the treasury benches once appointed by the government. Although nominated members typically remain independent in party affiliation, they traditionally support the government’s agenda that selected them.

Election Commission of India

Currently, the Rajya Sabha has 19 vacancies. The Congress aims to secure the lone seat in Telangana at the expense of the BRS, but this gain will be offset in Rajasthan, where the BJP, having a strong majority, is set to win the seat vacated by K C Venugopal, a senior opposition member who won the Lok Sabha election from Alappuzha in Kerala.

The BJP is confident of winning the single seat in Haryana, where the election will fill the vacancy left by its Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who was elected to the Lok Sabha.

The Congress, however, hopes that some MLAs, who are either independent or affiliated with regional parties and seeking political alternatives ahead of the assembly elections expected in October, might switch sides and bolster its fight.
